* * *

Later on that night I reflect on the day with a sort of nauseous feeling. For one thing, I feel awful, just plain awful, for what I did to Bruno. After I used my powers on him, he completely forgot that he was angry at me. I mean, he wasn’t upset at all. I’m a little concerned that the magic rattled his brain or something. And if that’s the case, did it rattle everyone else’s brains as well? Oh god. What if I have ruined everyone’s lives? What if my magic has altered them forever?

I throw myself on my bed and scream into my pillow. This is insane, absolutely insane. What are the odds that I would be the girl who wakes up to find out she has magical powers, powers that can change her friends’ lives? I’ve always been a strong believer in logic and science. For me, unless there is evidence or science to back up someone’s argument, I don’t even bother listening to it. But now here I am, apparently a half-mythical creature with no logical answer as to why I have what seem to be magical love powers.

Not only that, but there is now the scientific possibility that since magic exists, and there is such a thing as Cupid, other gods or magical creatures exist. Anything could exist. The possibilities are endless.

A knock interrupts my thoughts.

“Erin.”

My mom’s voice sounds small and tentative from the other side of my door.

I ignore her.

“I was just wondering if you wanted to talk.”

She pauses, waiting for me to respond. I remain quiet.

“Okay, I’m here for you whenever you’re ready to talk.”

Anger flares in me. Okay, great. Now you’re here when I’m ready to talk. What happened to telling me about my dad when I asked? Or how about letting me in on the secret that I am a supernatural matchmaker? No, things always have to be on my mom’s terms, but not this time. I’m not talking to her until I’m good and ready.

I don’t respond, and I finally hear my mom move away from the door.

I push all thoughts of the possibility of other magical creatures from my head. I honestly have enough to deal with, with secretive moms and absent Cupid dads.

My phone beeps, interrupting my thoughts. A smile flashes across my face as I notice the name. Trevor. I tap my phone, and his message flashes across the screen.

Trevor: Thanks for letting me crash your lunch today.
